Peon Struggles To Save 1-Month-Old Baby Girl From Bacterial Infection That Can Turn Fatal Without Treatment

“I was so happy when the nurse told me outside the delivery room that my wife and I were blessed with a baby girl. I resolved to give her the best life possible with my limited means as an office boy. But before I had kissed her tiny fingers and held her enough, she became very sick all of a sudden. She is battling a severe bacterial infection that has spread from her hip joint to the rest of her body. She needs treatment in ICU or she will not survive. I am not even able to afford my baby’s daily medicines and am scrambling for funds to save her. I am emotionally and financially drained.”-Parthiban, father.

This baby girl was fine until she got high fever unexpectedly 10 days after her birth

Parthiban and Sangeetha’s baby girl was born healthy after 9 months of pregnancy and weighed a good 3.65 kg also. Sangeetha hadn’t experienced any problems with her pregnancy either. The baby even drank milk well. Everything was going so well for these first-time parents before their baby developed a high fever one day. When she started showing signs of breathlessness, they rushed her to the hospital and she has been admitted ever since.

“I couldn’t believe how a healthy baby could become so critical within a matter of hours. She was rushed to the ICU on admission at the hospital. We really thought we had lost her, but thankfully she kept on fighting. She is so small – she hadn’t even become comfortable to a life outside the womb, and now she is covered in medical equipment. No baby deserves this fate.”-Sangeetha, mother.

A deadly bacterial infection in her hip joint had spread to her blood, making her very critical

The baby girl was brought to the hospital with severe infection and inflammation in her left hip joint, which spread to the rest of her body through the bloodstream. Additionally, there are clots in the blood vessel supply to the joint. She is also facing breathing difficulty due to a severe lung infection. She needs a long-term hospital stay, ranging from 2-3 weeks to a month, depending on her recovery.

“We wondered what we had done wrong as parents for our baby to go through so much pain. We asked the doctor if it was something that we did – but she told us that since newborn babies are very sensitive and vulnerable, she may have caught the bacterial infection even from the air. No parent can be prepared for a situation like this – all we can do is bear our pain helplessly.”-Parthiban.

Sangeetha has not fully recovered from her C-section, but her baby’s condition hurts her more

At a time when a new mother is supposed to rest and eat nutritious food, Sangeetha is worried about her baby girl. Her days and nights are spent guarding the ICU along with her husband. Anxiety is taking over her but she cannot rest until her baby is okay.

“I try to eat something even when I don’t feel like it, as I have to pump enough breastmilk for my baby. I cannot feed her myself now, but the fact that she is getting my milk gives me satisfaction. She hasn’t opened her eyes much and does not respond. I long to hold her next to my heart, but I can only hope that one day I’ll be able to do that.”-Sangeetha.

Parthiban has not been able to go to work regularly and is struggling to meet daily expenses let alone pay hospital bills

Parthiban works as a peon in a private company in Chennai. He had saved up some money for his wife’s delivery but had to borrow more money when she had to stay in the hospital for a couple of days after her C-section. With a meager income of Rs 9,000, he is not able to pay for his baby’s treatment now. He has borrowed almost Rs 30,000 from a friend until now. He doesn’t have anyone else to turn to now.

“My relatives are also from a modest background and cannot help me. Local moneylenders in my area know that I don’t earn much and refuse to lend money to me, because they know I won’t be able to pay it back. I want to save my daughter, but I have exhausted all my finances, and don’t have money for food and other expenses now. My wife and I are just spending days staring at each other in despair.”-Parthiban.
