Having Almost Lost Her Baby In An Accident, Rekha Is Now Struggling To Bring Him Home

It was an accident that almost took away Rekha's newborn baby from her on October 11. "I was walking down the road and suddenly, I slipped and fell. The pain of the fall was too much to bear. I remember thinking in between the bouts of pain, what would happen to my baby now?" said Rekha Shirkhe.

Rekha, a resident of Pune, was 7-months pregnant at that time and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by her husband. When she got there, the doctors made it clear to the family that Rekha's condition was bad. She was between life and death. The baby had to come out, or it would be fatal to both the mother and the child.

The family is fighting to stave off death

It was a difficult time for Rekha's family because even the doctors were not sure about to what extent could they help Rekha and her baby. Luckily though, after the emergency operation, both mother and child came out alive, but not without another pressing complication.

"I had no choice but to go ahead with an emergency C-section. That day, my worst nightmare came to life. Our baby was born at 30 weeks and was extremely underweight. I can’t explain how I made it through those hours while Rekha was undergoing surgery. Every minute that passed felt like a year to me," said her husband, Mohan Shirkhe.

Rekha is now all right and with the right medical care her baby will be too

Given that the newborn was underweight and has respiratory distress, the baby had to be rushed to the NICU. He was put on a ventilator and needed constant monitoring. Although he is out of the ventilator and has shown a substantial increase in weight, he still has to be in the hospital for next few weeks to ensure proper care.

So far, the family's medical bill has reached Rs 3.3 lakhs and they are not sure how much more will they have to pay to the hospital.

The family was caught unprepared for this emergency

Mohan Shirke is the only earning member of the family with a meagre salary of Rs 15,000 per month. Rekha stays with her in-laws. The estimated cost of entire treatment is Rs 3.3 lakhs and even though the family is doing their best to arrange funds, they are coming up short. They have taken loans already but as the bills keep mounting, no one will give them more.
