Cancer Is Snatching Away My Sweet 5-year-old's Life And We Need Help Saving Him

I don't like scaring my child to get him to stay indoors. Especially not when he already has a disease that is eating him up inside. I can't put in words what goes on in a parent's mind when their child has cancer. All I want to do is keep my son close to me and never let him go.

Everyday we have to tell him something to calm him down. He is a very active boy and he doesn't like staying locked up in a small room. We told him all the chocolates he ate has given him bugs in his tummy and he needs this painful treatment to remove them.

Nihal can't stay out too much because any infection at this point can be deadly

We never imagined his fever would be cancer when the doctor sent to Bangalore for tests

But Nihal is a typical child with a mind of his own. All he used to do before this happened was run around in circles all over the house. From one room to another. Even in school, where the teachers really like him because he is so good at his studies, they call us to complain about his restlessness.

Nihal is sad about having to stay isolated in the hospital

We can't really believe that our child has this terrible disease. It started with just a small swelling in his stomach. We should have known something was horribly wrong when they said no lab in Tumkur would be good enough and we needed to go to Bangalore for blood tests.

He hates injections and the hospital. We have told him that we have moved to a new house in Bangalore. But he brings up our old house and his school with a sad look in his eye. That breaks our heart because he is the happiest person we have known. It would be much better if he were angry.

Cancer is snatching away our little one's childhood

It is very hard because he doesn't know anything. He doesn't fear being sick – we are the ones terrified of losing the apple of our eye. What do we tell him when he keeps repeating that he doesn't want an injection or the pain any more?

When we first came here, we had to plead with him to stay indoors in the ward and the small room we have rented. But now, Nihal is tired and has pain in his hands and legs. He sleeps a lot more than before on his own. He has transformed from a hyperactive child to a tired and confused one.

The doctor tells us that children who recover from cancer often grow up to be resilient, and strong because of what they have gone through. I can't imagine a single day in the future because I am so scared of what it might hold. The biggest worry that keeps me up all night is our own ability to save Nihal. Will we be able to afford this exorbitant treatment on our own?

Please help us save our child

We both worked night and day so we could make enough to meet all his needs. Send him to a good school in Tumkur. He started saying he wanted to be a doctor – so we decided to start saving from now. With all that he has gone through – he does not want to be a doctor any more.

We sold off all my jewellery and have borrowed money from everyone we know. I left my job the day I found out about Nihal's cancer. My husband works in a small hospital in Tumkur and is the only earning member. What he earns is simply not enough.

We need help continuing our child's treatment which is the only way we can save him from cancer. Please help me save Nihal.
