With A Mentally Ill Husband And Zero Income This Mother Is Struggling To Save Her Son From Cancer

Noorjahan is alone in the hospital with her 9-year-old son, Halim who is fighting blood cancer. Her mentally ill husband cannot help her during this crisis. This mother of 3 is forced to run across the city on her own, trying to keep her son alive, while also caring for everyone in the family.
 

“Even while I am sitting with Halim my mind races back to my children back at home thinking if they are having food . While I am talking to them over phone, Halim is always at the back of my mind. I am struggling to provide the best for all my children but I fear I will fail them all,” - Noorjahan, mother.

His father is not in a condition to care for any of them

Noorjahan's struggle began even before the birth of her children. Her husband's mental condition was and remains undiagnosed. She did not know about it before. The only moral support this family has is Noorjahan's brother.

"He talks continuously. I cannot even understand what he is thinking or saying. He is not in this world. It hurts Halim that his father does not care he is dying. The truth is my husband does not understand. I have to do everything including buy ration, go to hospital, bank, drop children to school, and it hurts me to leave any of them alone for a while."

Halim finds solace in his uncle, who visits whenever possible.

‘Maa, it’s just hair, it will grow back - don’t worry’

Halim knows he has cancer but he remains undaunted. When his mother hugs him and cries looking at his hair loss, he consoles her saying that his hair will grow back.
 

“He has always been very close to me. He has seen me struggle all alone trying to bring them up. Even now, he doesn’t let me worry - he is always so positive. He believes he will get well soon and go back home.”

‘It has been 2 weeks and I have already spent 2 lakhs, how will I arrange for more?’

Halim has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia - a type of cancer of the blood and the bone marrow that affects the white blood cells. His immunity is reducing with every passing day and often he runs a high temperature. He has completed 2 rounds of chemotherapy but he needs 6 more months of treatment to get fully cured.
 

“The last seven months have been a harrowing experience for all of us. With my son fighting cancer and my husband being too sick to even go to work, I have been begging people for help. We have sold our small piece of land and the adjoining pond. My mother has also sold her jewellery and together we have about 2 lakhs. But that is not enough - we need 8 lakhs more.”
