Mother With A Failing Heart Has Only 1 Day To Save Her Baby Girl From Liver Disease

I am a heart patient. But I have stopped taking my medicines since it affects Harshita as I breastfeed her. My heart disease won’t let me conceive again. Sometimes I do feel out of breath very easily and I don’t know what the future holds for me. I’ve been told that I may need a heart transplant soon. But all that doesn’t matter now. I’m just so terrified for my little baby. Her liver is failing and she needs the transplant tomorrow. But we don’t have the money to afford it,” - Dakshata, mother of baby Harshita.

Dakshata has a disease which makes it harder for her heart to pump blood, and it’s known to lead to heart failure. But this mother is determined to save her baby girl - even if that puts putting her life at risk.

Harshita isn’t even a year old and she’s been to the hospital almost every single week since birth. Just when she was a month old, she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia - a liver disorder in infants. Her bile ducts are blocked and this has completely damaged her liver over the past year. She underwent surgery when she was 2 months old. But just about a week ago, Dakshata was left speechless when she was informed that the operation had failed. Now her baby had no option but to undergo an urgent liver transplant.

Harshita Has Been In The ICU Several Times Over The Past 2 Weeks

Harshita has been in and out of the ICU for the last two weeks. She was getting better after her first surgery but now her condition is very critical. Her life is hanging from a thread.

“I know how miserable I’ve been just waiting outside the ICU, watching all those tubes attached to her weak and tiny body. She’s watching videos and eating today, but things can change for the worse, anytime. And this time, we have only 24 hours.”

Harshita is so weak that she is unable to even sit on her own. Harshita’s liver failure can damage her brain permanently too. Her abdomen keeps on swelling up every day and now, her eyes are yellow too.  Dakhsata and Darshan have been trying tirelessly to arrange for Rs. 16.5 lakhs for the transplant, but they are nowhere close to arranging the amount.

Darshan works as an accountant in a private company. Although he was earning enough to support the family, a transplant costing lakhs is beyond his means.

“Darshan is the donor and up till now we’ve borrowed and spent all our savings on her operation and treatments, amounting to Rs. 4 lakhs. Her transplant is tomorrow and I can’t watch her go to the ICU again if she’s critical, what if she doesn’t come out alive? We can’t arrange such a massive sum in 1 day. 16.5 lakhs is just too much. All our hopes rest on you now, please help us and our baby.”

Baby Harshita has just one day to get a liver transplant. You are her only hope.
