Shoe-Seller's 8-Month-Old Won't Survive His Failing Heart Without An Urgent Surgery

Salim and his wife, Ashura Begum were overwhelmed when little Samim was born to them. They were a happily married couple and have been praying for a little baby to play in their arms. When they were blessed with little Samim, their joy knew no bounds. Little did they know that their happiness would be so short-lived. Samim was born with a congenital heart disease. The poor parents have exhausted their savings in travelling about 2000 kms from their hometown in West Bengal to come to Bangalore in search of better medical treatment. Now, they can’t afford the heart surgery which is the only way to save their little son.

Ashura’s pregnancy was without any complications so when her baby was born with this heart disease they were very shocked

Salim and Ashura’s baby was born with a heart disease called tricuspid atresia in which the tricuspid heart valve is missing or abnormally developed. This defect blocks blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle. Little Samim has a lot of difficulty to breathe and sometimes even when he cries out for a long time he gets tired and out of breath. He sweats profusely even on cold nights.

“Since Samim was born we have been making rounds of the hospital. He was just 2 months when we got to know about his ailment. Our heart sank as we thought about the tough life that our baby is going to have ahead unless the surgery was done. Since then, we have been spending sleepless nights worrying about our baby. My wife sits beside our baby and sheds silent tears, I feel utterly helpless thinking that I am unable to do anything.” - Salim, father.

A roadside shoe-seller, Salim’s meagre income is not enough to get his baby the life-saving surgery

Salim sells shoes in a flea market in Siliguri, West Bengal. His monthly income ranges from Rs 7000-8000. Needless to say, the amount is too less to run a family of three, leave aside affording a heart surgery for his son. He has already spent around Rs 40,000-45,000 on Samim’s treatment by borrowing from his close relatives. He needs another Rs 3 lakhs for the heart surgery. Without help, he won’t be able to arrange for the surgery and save his son.
