“Every day, I see relieved parents taking their babies home. I feel happy and hopeful when I see them, but I also worry if my baby girls will ever get to go home. After one week of being away from her newborn twins, Annapurna couldn’t wait any longer. The moment she felt stronger to walk, she asked to go to the NICU. When Annapurna saw her baby girls for the first time, she stood in silence. Nothing had prepared her for how small and frail they look. The numerous tubes and wires running through their bodies terrified her, but they’re the only thing keeping them alive. Annapurna and Soma Sundara did everything they can to start their baby girls’ treatment, but now they have nothing left to keep them in the hospital any longer.
The baby girls were born extremely underweight and struggled to breathe
Annapurna and Soma’s baby girls were born one minute apart in the seventh month of her pregnancy. They were delivered with an emergency c-section surgery, and that was just the beginning of their fight. They were both born extremely underweight. At 620 grams and 750 grams respectively, they struggled to breathe and were immediately taken to the NICU.
“My stitches after the surgery got infected, and it was a long week before I could see them. Every time we thought they were getting better, a new condition was discovered. Our first twin had to undergo dialysis when she was just 4-days-old. Soon, we were told that both had holes in their heart. Two weeks later, our first twin underwent a heart surgery. And we thought this could end only one way for them. We had lost hope, but our babies fought hard. Now, their condition is slowly improving. If we stop their treatment, all their progress will be for nothing.”

Their first twin is now still in the incubator on oxygen support, while their second twin baby has been moved to a warmer. Annapurna and Soma can now touch their babies every now and then, but it’ll be weeks before they can carry them home. Though the twins’ weight is gradually increasing and they’re making little progress every day, they’re still not completely out of danger. They need to stay in the NICU for at least 4 weeks to start recovering, but the mounting medical bills have left the new parents helpless.
“Days turned into weeks, and before we knew it, our babies had been in the hospital for nearly 2 months. We’ve spent 15 lakhs on their treatment so far. All our savings, everything we’ve ever had, is now gone. I only recently started working as a professor in a college. My husband is a dentist and earns 15,000 per month. With this, there is no way for us to afford 50 lakhs to save our babies.”
