Children at one of the Bodhi Academies started by SKS Microfinance

In 2009, SKS Microfinance (the largest MFI in India) set up sixteen academies across 4 districts of Andhra Pradesh as part of its SKS Educational Society branch. These academies, called Bodhi Academies, provide quality education to low-income communities at a very low cost (INR 160-220 per month per student, ie USD 3-5 per month).

Besides, unlike other rural schools, Bodhi Academies strive to provide children with an interactive, practical curriculum through a special “play way method” which will prepare them for a bright future. The teachers, who are taken from both local and non-local areas, are retrained by SKS so that they can teach the children as per the SKS Bodhi Academy methodologies.

Since its inception in 2009, the number of enrolled students in the Bodhi Academies has increased by about ten times til date. You can read more about the Bodhi Academies here.
