Today's image shows a solar home lighting system being installed at the outskirts of Belgaum by SELCO SOLAR using a microfinance model. Unlike lanterns, these systems provide for complete electrification of a household (1 to 4 lights, a ceiling fan, mobile phone and any other accessories) The cost of these systems range from 6000 - 25000 INR (~$140 to $600). SELCO connects borrowers with local credit institutions with loans paid over 2-5 years!

Using this model, SELCO has electrified over 100,000 households in Karnataka alone in the past 15 years.
