Raised By Sisters After Her Mother's Death, This 10-Year-Old Now Fights Cancer

Shivani is only 10-years-old but has already witnessed the loss, pain, and suffering of a lifetime. Her mother died of a heart attack 5 years ago and she is being raised by her three older sisters. Shivani’s father, Krishna works as a daily wage labourer and struggles to raise four daughters all alone with him being the sole breadwinner of the family. Now, he’s working day and night to afford her cancer treatment.

“Shivani and I have an age difference of 10 years. I have held her the day she was born and I have named her. I have been more of a mother than a sister to her ever since we lost our mother. I can’t believe she has cancer and that her precious life is in danger. Shivani still does not know about her condition.” – Kalpana, Eldest sister (Age 21)

A fall while dancing led to a grave diagnosis

Shivani had a very active lifestyle with a lot of dancing involved which is her passion. 2 months ago, she fell while dancing. She had a swollen right ankle. Her sisters thought it could be a sprain and tried a few home remedies. When the pain and swelling did not ease, she was taken to the hospital. The family was in shock when they were informed that Shivani has developed a cancerous tumor in her ankle. She needs chemotherapy and a surgery to survive.

Shivani’s older sister has quit her studies to take care of her

“Shivani is the youngest and the darling of the family. I have now discontinued my studies to take care of her now. My sister, Kalpana, is in her final year of graduation and she has to finish her studies so that she can take up a job next year and support the family. Shivani has also not been able to go to school this year because of cancer. ” – Pallavi, Elder sister (Age 19)

Shivani has osteogenic sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The doctors have suggested that Shivani undergoes a surgery to be cured. The surgery is Rs. 8 lakhs. The other option is to amputate Shivani’s right leg. Shivani loves to dance. Losing her leg would be the most devastating for her. She needs the surgery soon, but her family just can’t afford it.

Her father can't even be with her during her fight

My daughters are my biggest strength and pride. I work as daily wage labor and earn around 200 Rupees a day. My earnings are just sufficient to feed my family and take care of basic needs. My daughters are all studying under scholarships out of their own effort. I don’t know how to arrange the cost for Shivani’s surgery. I work all day and it’s still not enough. I can’t even be with her during all this…we cannot lose her at any cost.” – Krishna, Father

Krishna and his daughters need your help to save Shivani. Shivani is the life of this family. Your contribution can save not just one life, but this entire family.
