Sanath is a great student. He got a
98% in his
10th Standard Final Exams, which earned him a
scholarship for his 11th Standard, where he
got a 100% in the Final Exams.
Sanath is a great son. Whenever he came home from the hostel where he lived, he helped his father with his farming work no matter how tired he was.
Sanath is a great brother. Every night, without fail, he called his sister to find out how she was doing. Asked her about her day, asked if she needed help with any homework.
Sanath is all these things and more. He is 17. He is a best friend. He is an aspiring engineer.
He is also dying from cancer.
One month ago, Sanath called home from his hostel and
complained to his father, Surender, about a
recurring high fever and increasing weakness. Surender
immediately went to his son’s hostel and brought him home to his village, but
his condition just worsened while he rested. He
got weaker, and the
next day Surender noticed that
Sanath’s gums were starting to swell and enlarge unnaturally.
“We took him to the only dentist in our village, who gave him some medicines. But that night when I went to my son’s room to check on him, he looked…His eyes were sunken into his face and he was breathing so weakly. I immediately yelled for my husband and we took him to the closest hospital, but after one look at him, they asked us to leave. We couldn’t believe our ears. They said something about how he was beyond saving now. But we did not accept that. Our son would live.” – Sunitha, mother
Determined, Sunitha and Surender
took him to a bigger hospital nearly a 100km away. There the doctors
ran some tests and
discovered that young Sanath has Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, and that it was killing him. Unfortunately for this family, that
hospital was not equipped to help Sanath’s condition either. Desperate now, Surender and Sunitha finally brought Sanath to Hyderabad, nearly 600km away, just last week, where he was
immediately admitted into the ICU.
At last, young Sanath has reached a hospital that is equipped to save his life. But his father never imagined how much it would cost.
“They told me he needs urgent chemotherapy and that will be at least ₹20,00,000. I didn’t know what to say. I’m just a farmer, I’ll never be able to come up with that much. Even if I sold my farm and home 10 times over, it would not be enough. And if I sell my farm and home at all, my wife and daughter would be on the streets and I wouldn't be able to feed them. One week of getting proper medical care has already made him look more alive. He has started smiling again. I don’t know how to tell my son I can’t afford to save his life.” – Surender, father
Sanath is a student. He is a brother. He is a son. He is 17, he is a best friend, he is an aspiring engineer. But most of all, Sanath is loved. He is loved by his family, he is loved by his friends. Don’t let cancer take Sanath away from everyone who loves him. It would leave a hole in their lives that could never be filled again.
