Her husband hasn't yet seen their new born's face
My husband is a mason. A month back he fell down from a roof in the construction site and fractured his legs. I was nine months pregnant with my second child at that time. Doctors told he won’t be able to walk again any soon. Within a few days after that incident, I delivered my baby. He couldn’t be there with me but spoke to me over the phone : “You know why God has saved my life from that accident? He doesn’t want our child to be fatherless. Come home soon, I want to hold him in my arms”. But now I’m scared. I don’t know if I can take my baby home alive.
Gangeswari’s baby was underweight when he was born. After two days he started having difficulty in breathing and that’s when his heart problem was diagnosed. The two main arteries of his heart are in the opposite position. Due to this the way the blood is circulated in the body changes, resulting in a shortage of oxygen in the blood flowing from the heart. Her baby needs urgent heart surgery to survive.
I ate healthily, I never missed any check-ups or scans. Never thought my baby would have to suffer like this. On the third day, he was born they shifted us to a bigger hospital in the city immediately. It’s been two weeks since we came here. I’m alone, with no one even to support or to help to buy medicines. I wish my husband was here with me. I just pray to God to save my baby’s life and take him home.
Relatives call her baby's birth as a bad omen and wants her to stop fighting for his lifeHer husband was the sole breadwinner and the family has no other source of income. When he met with an accident and broke his leg, her distant relatives blamed her baby's birth as a sign of ill omen. They refused to help her financially and asked her not to save his life.
Her parents and in-laws are old and they are her only support. They are helping her by looking after her husband and their 6-year-old daughter at home. It was her cousin who was with her when she moved into this new hospital but he too had to leave the next day to look after his livelihood. To undergo the arterial switch operation, she needs to pay an amount of Rs. 6 Lacs but Gangeswari doesn't know how she will arrange for that.
My husband has lost his job and he can’t go to work until he walks. We don’t have any valuables to sell or pawn. We haven’t yet returned the money that we borrowed for paying my husband’s hospital bills and treatment. So none of our neighbours and relatives is ready to lend again. It gives me sleepless nights thinking about paying such a huge amount in a short period. I promised my husband that I will be brave and fight for my baby. I promised to bring him home alive. Now I’m scared that I won’t be able to keep up that promise...
