This Baby Was Born Fighting For His Life, His Parents Are Now Struggling To Afford Treatment

On a hot summer’s day in a small village in Rajasthan, a happy and glowing Aarti started her morning with a prayer for her unborn child. She then went about her day like any other, finishing small household chores, when suddenly she felt a pulling pain in her stomach. Aarti immediately knew that something was wrong, it was only the seventh month of her pregnancy and the baby’s kick had never been as painful. Aarti quickly called Dharam and he rushed her to the hospital.

“The next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital ward, without my baby by my side. I didn’t even know if we had a boy or a girl. My husband told me that our son had a little trouble breathing and needed to stay in intensive care, and I begged him to let me see him. But it was only 15 days later that I got to see our baby. He was all alone in the ICU with a machine that was helping him breathe.” - Aarti, Mother

Seconds after he was born, he was placed on ventilator support

It’s been one month since Aarti and Dharam’s baby boy has been in the NICU. Since he was born extremely premature and underweight, his lungs and gut were underdeveloped, causing him severe difficulty in breathing and feeding. To add to his struggle, his immune system was also weak. However, their baby boy is a fighter. The doctors told the new parents that he has responded well to the treatment and can make it out stronger if he stays in the NICU for at least 4 more weeks.

Their only child will make with continued treatment, but with no income, they’re falling short

While sitting in the waiting room of the hospital, all Aarti and Dharam can do is cry at their plight. To save money, they each have only one meal a day and spend the rest of the time sipping on water. The distressed couple is doing all they can to try and save their first child’s life, but Dharam hasn’t been able to go for work in a month now and they have no income. He works in a small shop in Jaipur and used to travel 30 km every day from their village. With his income of Rs. 6000 per month, they lived a simple life. While the news of their baby’s improving condition finally gave Aarti and Dharam hope, they still can’t breathe a sigh of relief.

“We had only 3000 rupees in savings when our baby was admitted to the hospital and could borrow 7000 from our relatives and neighbours. This isn’t enough to continue our baby’s treatment. We can only take him home once he's stronger."
