Fakirappa said that his village used to face a very dismal power situation. When I spoke to the residents, they told me how they used to take water from a nearby lake. Since the water there was not very clean, that area experienced widespread water-borne stomach infections. They invested in a water purifier by taking a loan of Rs. 3,00,000. Now, the residents are much happier. They said that they pay Rs. 2 for 20 liters of water every day. This is enough to supply 120 families in the village with clean drinking water, and has drastically reduced the stomach infections that used to be so common.
