Story
We, Mandar And No More Foundation is a network of volunteers who got involved in the cause after the founders Prateebha and Vishwas lost their teen aged son to a drowning accident in a notorious water body in Bhopal. They somehow underwent the rituals but realised that there was Mandar but focused on there being Mandar And No More later the Mandar And No More Foundation.
We realised that death through drowning is the 2nd largest accidental killer in our country and took a pledge to fight this out. Analyzing data from numerical sources and the best scientific evidence available (2017) informs us that 1.2 million people around the world die by drowning every year i.e more than two persons per minute. In India, the figure stands at 66,285 deaths per year as on 2017, which means there are about 8 deaths an hour, 1 every 3 minutes. Morbidity or permanent disability figures are astoundingly higher and take a larger toll on the victim and all the near and dear ones – emotionally, physically and financially. World Health Organization (WHO) claims that low- and middle-income countries account for over 90% of unintentional drowning deaths. Research Gate claims that 71% of the fatal drowning accidents target children in the lower income group globally. To counter this phenomena The Alliance for Safe Children together with The Royal Life Saving Society of Australia and UNICEF have trained more than 150,000 kids in Bangladesh and 15,000 kids in Vietnam to swim. Recent research by UNIFEF found that fatal drowning rate among children who took Swim Safe classes in Bangladesh were 93% lower than among children who did not participate. According to the American Red Cross, WHO, Swim Safe, Royal Life Saving Society and number of other international organizations there’s an easy way to help reduce tragic drowning incidences: Teach kids to swim. Mandar And No More Foundation, which is addressing this issue in a holistic manner intends to conduct swimming lessons for children socially excluded, marginalized, economic backward segment of society who are vulnerable to the issue and mainly children from slums near water bodies. As a pilot with learning from Bangladesh and Vietnam, Mandar And No More Foundation (MANM) would start teaching swimming to about 700 children in both boys and girls through professional trainers using required life saving equipment in proper swimming pools in Bhopal. These classes would also intend to open up livelihood opportunities for both girls and boys. Aspirants and those capable would be given an advanced course and would be absorbed as either life guards or swimming trainers in the coming courses since MANM would like to scale up activities with larger groups covering most of the geographic area of the country. A cost of INR 1500 per child for swimming classes is worth a life saved
Support for this cause is solicited from all Indian citizens.
