    Shyamapada

    from Bangalore, Karnataka

Ganesh and Gayatri haven’t been sleeping for days now. They haven’t even eaten properly. Their voices tremble if you ask them how their only son, Shyamapada, is doing. He is only 14 but he is fighting cancer. His parents feel helpless, they don’t know if they can save their son.

“He was doing fine, you know. He was okay for 2 years. We never thought the disease would come back to haunt our lives again. My son is not worried, he thinks he will get better soon. But I am scared to death, I fear I will lose him if I can’t afford his treatment,” - Ganesh, father.

He looked healthy, how can he have cancer again?

Ganesh remembers the day, 3 years ago, distinctly. No father can forget that sight. He had come home from work only to find a worried Gayatri sitting beside Shyamapada’s bed. He was burning with fever. He was tossing and turning in pain. Ganesh immediately took him to the doctor. Little did he know that this would be the first of many visits to the doctor. Little did he know that he would have to sleep on the cold, hard hospital floor in Bangalore for almost 2 years as his only child would be undergoing painful chemotherapy.

“But I didn’t lose hope. I was determined to save him, whatever be the cost. And when he walked out of the hospital cancer-free, it was the happiest day for me.”

But just a month ago, Shyamapada’s follow-up tests revealed that he has had a relapse. The pain, the weakness, the fever is back and it is worse than ever.

Everyone came together to help me the last time, who will help me now?

Ganesh is a daily wager who works on others’ farms. He is the one fending for his family but on most days of the month, he doesn’t have a job. He has already spent over 5 lakhs, but the last time the entire village had come forward to help him.

“Now I need 5 lakhs more. I can’t go back to these people, begging for help. But if I delay my son’s treatment, he might not live. What should I do? Only you can help me now,” - begs this desperate father.

This 14-year-old’s life is in danger. He is in the clutches of cancer, yet again. His poor father can’t afford the treatment that can save him. With your help, Shyamapada can live a better life.
