“It was just a normal night for us. I was rocking Niya to sleep in my arms, humming her favorite lullaby quietly, because Nidha – Niya’s twin – was already asleep and snoring. Just the previous week Niya had recovered from a viral infection, so seeing her smiling as she slowly fell asleep was… It was such a precious moment for me. I was thanking god for his blessings, when all of a sudden Niya started breathing heavily. And then within minutes, my little baby was gasping for breath…” – Gairunisa, mother, fighting tears

Gairunisa had rushed Niya (3-month-old) to the hospital, where the doctors immediately put her on ventilator support, then ran x-rays and an echocardiogram. When the results came back, they had told the stunned mother that Niya’s heart was extremely weak. Her baby’s tiny heart was struggling to pump blood throughout her small body, fighting to stay alive… but failing.

The doctors are saying that Niya's heart must still be weak from the viral fever she had last week. She needs to stay on ventilator support and get regular treatment for at least another 10 days, otherwise she'll not make it.

But we can’t afford that kind of care. Just last month Nidha, Niya's twin, had meningitis. Our entire life-savings went into treating her for that. We have nothing left now. To keep Niya in the hospital for the past one week, I’ve had to borrow money from everyone I know. I… I even had to sell my taali (wedding necklace)” – Gairunisa, crying

Gairunisa's husband, Naushad, is a factory worker. He stays and works in Bangalore, and is there right now because he can’t take any more leaves.

He was by my side all throughout my delivery and for a month afterwards, so if he takes even another day off he’ll lose his job. I have to take care of everything here myself, and I just… I feel so alone… If something happens to my baby I don’t know if I can take it…

Gairunisa is helpless in her pain. In this time of need, you are the only hope she has to save her baby’s life. Donate whatever you can, and help this family now.
