"4 years back, we almost lost her. We don't know if it is her will power or our prayers that brought her back to us. Now her life is at risk again, she has grown up and she understands that her condition is serious. We can't bear to see her thinking of death all the time at this age," - Malliga, mother of 11-year-old Mohanapriya
Her only wish is to have a normal childhood like othersMohanapriya was seemingly a healthy child and her heart disease was diagnosed only when she turned 3. Suddenly she developed breathing trouble and her hands turned blue often. Doctors said she would get better as she grows and prescribed medicines. She was tired most of the time and her breathing trouble did not let her play like other children. She was isolated from her classmates and her only companion were her painting books.
"We thought someday she would get better but it only got worse. She has not asked us anything about it but now she understands that she has a problem. She longingly looks at other kids playing on the streets. She tries to join them sometimes but within few minutes she falls short of breath," - Malliga

There is hope but we cannot afford itMohanapriya had surgery 4 years back, a shunt was placed in her heart to improve the blood flow but it affected her brain and she got severe infections. She was in ICU for 3 months after which she recovered. She seemed to be normal for a year but her breathing troubles started again. Her condition is getting worse and an open heart surgery is the only option to save her life but it is beyond her parents' means.
"She knows that she needs a surgery, she is not afraid of it. She knows after the surgery she can be normal like others. We don't have the strength to tell her that we have no money for it. We feel extremely helpless and guilty," - Mani
