After An 11-Year Struggle, This Mother May End Up Losing Her Son Now

Ask for an update

I can’t really remember a time when my child wasn’t suffering. The doctors told us right after his birth that he had a liver defect. Since then we have done everything we should, everything we could, to help him get better. But it has still been 11 years of pain and fear for him.
I just want my son to have a childhood before he’s too old to have one. Or before he… before…
– Rajnikumari, mother, breaking down

Little Manikanta was born with Biliary Atresia, a defect in the liver’s bile duct that causes severe damage to the liver, and build-up of toxic bile in the bloodstream. Manikanta had to undergo a surgery at just 3 months to try and fix the problem, but it was only partially successful. The poor boy has required daily medicines and frequent hospitalization over the past 11 years to keep his liver-damage to a minimum. He still developed some symptoms like a permanent swollen belly, yellow (jaundiced) eyes.

Being hospitalized so often and so long had unexpected side effects

“He used to come home from school crying sometimes, saying children were making fun of him for being the oldest boy in class, for having a big stomach. It used to break our hearts, but what could we do? He had to be hospitalized for months sometimes, and he kept falling farther and farther behind in school. Our priority was his health, so certain sacrifices had to be made like… having a normal childhood.”– Rajnikumari, tearing up.

The disease has caught up to him now, and he needs an immediate liver transplant

After more than a decade of fighting, little Manikanta’s liver disease has caught up to him. His liver has almost entirely failed, and he doesn’t have long left now before it shuts down once and for all. His stomach is more swollen than ever and he is in constant pain. Only a liver transplant can save his life now. But his family cannot afford it.

His family did everything they could, everything they should, to keep him alive

“Over the years, my wife sold every bit of jewellery she had. She wears just glass bangles now. And a few years ago I sold a small plot of land that has been in my family for three generations. I’m just a daily wager, and even though I work multiple jobs whenever I can… we don’t have enough money to save my son now... I don’t even remember how many loans I’ve taken, I just know nobody will lend me any more.”
– Srinivas

Srinivas and Rajni are desperate. After fighting for 11 years, they can’t imagine losing their son now. Please contribute as much as you can, and help save little Manikanta’s life.
