“Ifra cries through the day. There’s hardly a moment in the day when we see a smile on her face. We have built many dreams for her, but a tumor that sits behind Ifra's eye has shattered our hopes." - Imran (father). When Ifra was born, three and a half years ago, it was a moment of joy the family had waited for. Imran and his wife were thrilled. In 2 years, she won every heart in the family and neighborhood. When Ifra started having frequent periods of breathlessness, they consulted a doctor. Tests and medical procedures followed. Needless to say, the results came as a shock, throwing their life out of gear. Ifra was diagnosed with cancer.
Our dreams have been shattered
Alongside the treatment, her parents' efforts and the little girl's resilience helped Ifra get close to overcoming the torment of this deadly illness. This brief period of joy, though, did not last long. The doctor's words brought their world crashing down. Years of hope seemed to slip away in a flash. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia. Ifra, now, has a tumor behind the eye, with the cancer cells spreading at an alarming rate.Imran can’t bear to see her go through the side-effects of the lone chemotherapy session. Little Ifra is going through repeated bouts of vomiting, painful bowel movements, and extreme fatigue. Her platelet count has seen a sharp decrease and she suffers from acute stomach-infections almost every day.
The 3-year-old who should have been filling the four walls of her home with her laughter, is confined to a hospital ward. “She wants to go home, she can’t bear the pain. Nothing had ever meant more to us than seeing her recover. Her ability to bear the excruciating pain, gave us hope. Her courage was our strength. I don’t want to give up. I will go to any extent to save her,” says Imran, as he breaks down inconsolably.
We have nothing left to pay but we can’t give up
This baby girl expresses her pain by screaming out loud and it is heartbreaking for anyone. For 3 days now, she has been constipated. It has been painful for her to empty her bowels and she pleads with her parents to help. Her father is going to work every day to earn as much as he can for her treatment.Imran and his wife spend all their day at the hospital. Imran works for a private company and has exhausted all his savings. Having spent more than 4 Lakh rupees on the treatment so far, he is in debt and requires 7 Lakh rupees more to have a chance of helping his daughter beat cancer. All that Ifra’s mother hopes for is to see her daughter back home cancer free. She looks forward to that day where her husband can come back home from work to be welcomed with his daughter’s smile.
