Gramalaya Urban And Rural Development Initiatives (GUARDIAN), is a microfinance institution that exclusively provides micro-credit to build water and sanitation facilities around Trichy, Tamil Nadu. It provides technical support for creating low cost infrastructure of these facilities to improve rural life. Milaap partnered with GUARDIAN in December 2010 on a successful pilot, providing affordable loans to build water and sanitation facilities. The pilot gained momentum through support from Yunus Social Business Fund. In November 2011, we started a full-fledged program, providing poor women loans to build water connections and toilets. By July 2012, Milaap disbursed Rs 7.1 million, improving lives of 4180 people – their health, environment, overall income, and savings.
