Funding construction of toilets for households and communities.
More than 600 million people defecate in the open every day. Most cases of sexual assault and rape in rural areas occur when women go out to defecate in the open.
Milaap’s approach of financing sanitation interventions is 2 fold. 1) We fund construction and renovation of toilets for individual households in rural and semi-urban areas. 2) At a community level, we fund schools catering to low-income communities to build additional and separate restrooms for boys and girls. This increases the school attendance of girls as well as improves their participation in activities.
Women no longer fear assault when they go to relieve themselves
Saves time, and the security creates a healthy society.
Prevention of open-defecation improves the standard of living.
For several years, Parameswaran was forced to carry his disabled daughter to the fields every day so that she could relieve herself. A loan from Milaap helped him build a toilet at home, and made his life easier.
