Funding portable solar lighting solutions, solar home systems and smokeless cookstoves.
India alone has around 450 million people who lack access to electricity and for whom living in darkness is a way of life. Often, a kerosene lamp is the only source of light in the household. Noxious fumes from burning firewood for cooking cause severe respiratory illnesses and claim a life every 20 seconds – mostly women and children.
Milaap’s approach of financing energy interventions is 3 fold.
We fund
1) Lighting solutions that replace kerosene lamps with portable, solar/LED lamps that are safer, brighter and cheaper.
2) Improved cooking solutions for the household such as efficient cookstoves and biogas plants that pose fewer hazards and save time otherwise spent to collect fuel.
3) Solar home systems and micro-grids that provide electricity to entire households and villages cut off from the main grid.

This video reflects the impact $20 can have on a borrowers life. Solar lighting is illuminating the lives of those in rural India who have stayed in the dark all their lives.
