What's the significance of schools in our lives?

Waking up with mother’s insistent voice, brushing teeth with sleepy eyes, missing the bus every next day, early morning assemblies and having fun with friends; some memories always make you nostalgic and school days are definitely one of those. But have you ever wondered, what is the significance of school in your life? What if you never had a chance to play on that amazing basketball court you still dearly miss? Those teachers who always seemed to had a vendetta against you but cared most deeply; can you imagine being you if they were never a part of your life?edu 6Millap fellowship takes me on various astonishing trips; and today during one such trip I got to experience nostalgia and dreams, hopes and fears, and above all else life in its most varied colors. Childhood is a realm free of any bounds; it’s a night where sleep comes easily and the day is a playground of curiosity. But such is not the case for every child in this world. Millions of children face untold fears on a daily basis, living in an unsafe and unhealthy environment with no means of escape.edu 1EveryChild, an international development charity, works to provide a ray of hope to these children. To kick start my day, I visited an activity center in Nidagundi village in the Belgaum district of Karnataka. As a part of EveryChild project in India, activity centers are run in rural areas to provide underprivileged children with basic elementary education. I visited this center to learn about work being done under the EveryChild project; but I learned something far more important. Children have a way of surprising you when you least expect it; and so they surprised me here as well. Among the clamor and shared laughter, I was given a friendship band and a special smile and a handshake by every single child.

But when I saw the classrooms, they were unlike any other classrooms I've ever seen. As an attempt to reduce drop-out rate and improve quality of education, Karnataka state government has introduced Nali-Kali system in various government schools. Nali-Kali literally means joyful learning. There are various debates among educationists regarding the success of this activity-based learning initiative; but I’m no expert to make any comment upon that or draw any conclusions. All I can say is that I saw a class full of students actively participating in every activity. I witnessed a teaching methodology which was new and creative.

Have you done anything new and creative lately?

Life offers us a lot of things; and a lot of opportunities to offer back to life as well. Today I saw children playing in playgrounds, studying in classrooms, some dreaming, some blissfully ignorant. These are children who had minimal options, and yet when given a hand they took it and are on their way to achieving their goals.

Have you experienced the joy of giving lately? Have you given a Milaap loan lately?
