S. Savithiri learnt the business of masala making at the age of 43. She has increased the income of her family by Rs. 500 monthly, and is proud and happy that she is able to pay for the expenses of her children. When I asked her what changes she has made since she started her business, she told me that she has paid Rs. 7000 as fees for her son who is in class 10. She has bought herself iron supplement pills worth Rs. 600, to help combat her anemia.
She has also changed the flooring and roof of her toilet. In the future, she said that she wants to be able to renovate her house, and plans to expand her business and sell her products in bulk. She wishes for her sons to get a good education and get white-collar jobs. For herself, she is now eager to learn another skill – tailoring – and be able to have her own tailoring unit one day.
