Despite Being Thirsty All The Time, This 6-Month-Old Cannot Drink Even A Drop Of Water Due To Liver Disease

“We have been running to the hospital ever since my baby was born, all she has seen is pain. Despite taking medicines and injections every day, her condition has only deteriorated with time. She has severe infections and rashes all over her skin that do not heal quickly. She has lost weight drastically. All she can eat is a thick consistent ‘rice congee’ and she cannot have any liquids because of her by condition. Her lips have become dry and I can see how thirsty she is, but even an ounce of water can make her condition worse.” - Deepa, mother

“I did not understand why she was crying all the time”

When Varshini was born, her parents Deepa and Srinath had to wait for 15 days to take their angel home from the ICU due to several complications. Even before her parents could feel relieved about her health condition, they received another shock. When they found that her stools were white, they were told that it is due to liver problem. Baby Varhsini underwent Kasai Procedure when she was just 35 days old to remove the blockage in her bile ducts, but even this did not help her for a long time. After a few days, she started crying uncontrollably and she could not pass stools because of piles which are a clear sign that her bile ducts are blocked again. Deepa recollects, “She used to cry without breaks and her whole body would turn red, I tried everything possible but I ended up breaking down as nothing helped her. ”

Poor baby passes watery stools 10 times a day

Baby Varshini was given medicines to help her pass stools. It, in turn, had an adverse effect on her body and she developed severe diarrhoea. It became worse; she passes stools at least 10 times a day now, which makes her extremely weak. She has painful rashes around her anus. She also suffers from multiple infections and fluid accumulation in her stomach. Fever hasn’t subsided despite taking medicines. The doctors have said that only an urgent liver transplant can put an end to all her suffering and save her life.

Baby Varshini before her condition became critical

“She is just 6 months old and has already been through so much pain. She cannot even express her pain, every time we rush her to the hospital, she was diagnosed with different problems. I lost count on the number of medicines she had taken in these months. Nothing could comfort her. I’m longing to see her smile and live without any pain.”

Her photographer father has been struggling to afford his baby’s treatment for the past 6 months

Srinath works as a photographer for a newspaper and with his modest income he managed to spend for his daughter’s treatment till now. His friends and relatives also helped him but nothing seems to be enough. The liver transplant costs over 20 lakhs which is beyond his means. He is a matched donor and his baby needs it at the earliest, but he is helpless and is desperately waiting for help to save his baby.

“We have forgotten what it is to live a normal life. We have been running to hospitals and tried everything that is possible. Now the only option we have is a liver transplant but we cannot afford it. I can’t bear to see my child suffering so much.  I live in guilt every moment and we cannot even imagine losing her.” – Srinath.
