She Was On The Verge Of Losing Her Life To Liver Damage When You Saved Her, Now You Can Help Others Like Her

For Deepa and Srinath, the initial few months after their baby’s birth were nothing but distressing. Little Varshini had spent the first 15 days of her life in the NICU due to several complications. Then, even before she could be cleared to go home, another bomb was dropped on her parents that had shaken them to their very core - Varshini was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a condition where the bile ducts either don’t develop properly or are blocked at birth, and it eventually progressed to liver damage.

“All I can recall from that time is running from one hospital to another, with our ailing baby in our arms. Despite the daily medicines and injections, her condition had been worsening at a rapid pace - she was also so easily prone to infections and rashes on her skin. She underwent a Kasai procedure, and we had our hopes pinned on it - that it would help her recover. But we soon realised that even that had failed. It was absolute hell for us, but more so for our Varshini who was in so much pain.” - Deepa, mother

Liver transplant was her last resort, but her parents had no way of affording it

Following the failure of the Kasai procedure, Varshini experienced several more complications that left her in a terribly weak state. No amount of medicines were able to give her any sort of relief. Then came the doctors' final verdict: a liver transplant that can end all her suffering and save her life. But her parents had absolutely no way of affording such an expensive procedure.

“For months I had been struggling to afford her treatment with my modest income as a photographer for a newspaper. So, when it came time for me to arrange for her life-saving transplant, I was at a complete loss. My friends and relatives also helped me quite a bit, but even that didn’t seem to be enough. I was delighted when I found out that I could be her donor. But without the 20 lakh rupees that her treatment would require, I was helpless.” - Srinath, father

When they’d been low on hope, you gave them the strength to fight

With everything that they were going through, this family had forgotten what it was like to live a normal life. The constant hospital visits, and stressing and worrying about their baby had taken over all their time. It even came to a point where they’d exhausted all resources and were running low on hope. That is when you showed them the light at the end of the tunnel - and gave them the strength to keep fighting. With your support, Varshini was able to undergo a liver transplant successfully.

Today, Varshini is 4 years old, and as healthy as ever. She has recently started school, and is going about her life just as any normal child her age.

“I was overwhelmed to receive so much love and support for my baby, Varshini. Each day of my life, I thank God whole-heartedly for giving our baby the strength to fight and win this battle like a true warrior. But above all, I am extremely grateful and appreciative for all the great hearts around us. Thank you all, the known and unknown faces, that contributed to our life physically, financially, morally and what not. I feel very tiny before this world of huge hearts.” - Deepa

Varshini was fortunate to have received your help on time, but many other children with chronic liver conditions are not as lucky. Millions of children suffer from unbearable pain and discomfort caused by their damaged liver, and their poor parents can do nothing but look on helplessly. If these little ones do not undergo a liver transplant within a specified time-frame, their lives are endangered. Funds stand between them and their healthy, bright futures.

You can help avoid these complications, by donating to Milaap Liver Transplant Corpus fund, which will ensure that no child suffering from end-stage liver disease is left behind.
