"My son has lost all his strength. He cannot play or even talk like he used to. He knows he has cancer, but he still tries to stay positive. He says, "Maa, don't cry, I'll be back home soon, I'm strong like superman" but the truth is that cancer is killing him slowly. I break down every day because there's nothing I can do to take his pain away." - Chandrabali.
By the time Pradip's cancer was diagnosed, his condition had deteriorated
Chandrabali and Gauranga live in Murshidabad, West Bengal, with their two children Indra (15) and Pradip (13). On April 2018, Pradip had a high fever, and within a few days, his face and neck were swollen. He was immediately taken to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with a lung infection and given medications for it. Unfortunately, the dreadful cancer was not diagnosed then. Poor Pradip was living with the unbearable pain for many days.
"His condition kept getting worse and medicines didn't help him. With great difficulty, we took him to a hospital in Kolkata. He was diagnosed with cancer and doctors immediately started chemotherapy. There was no time to waste. At such a young age, my son is trying hard to be brave and smiles through the pain. We should be the one comforting him, but he's always asking us to stay strong. I can't imagine losing him." - Gauranga Pal.
Without treatment, cancer will spread all over his body
Pradip is diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, cancer of the lymphatic system in which the white blood cells grow abnormally. He needs intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy without which, cancer will spread all over his body. Any delay will deteriorate his condition beyond repair."He loves playing cricket and his favorite food is chicken, but now he can't do anything that he likes. He always listens to the doctors and takes all the medicines and injections on time. But he has a painful journey ahead of him.The moment he gives up, we will have nothing left to hold on to. It's his positivity that has given us strength so far." - Chandrabali.
His parents have no source of income now and can't even afford medicines anymore
Pradip's father was working in a mobile shop in his hometown. He is now struggling to find a new job in the new city. He leaves early in the morning in search of a job and comes late at night to the hospital, while Chandrabali stays with Pradip all day. They don't have anyone to share their sorrows with and have been bottling up all their emotions to try and fight hard to save their son."My son trusts us so much, and thinks we will take him home soon. I can't look at him without feeling guilty. The only time he cries is when we cry. He is truly God's gift to us. I can't bear to lose him. I don't have money to even buy medicines. How can I afford his treatment? What will I tell my son? I feel terrible." - Gauranga
