6-Year-Old Has Zero Immunity And Even A Small Infection Can Kill Him

“He is just 6-years-old and sometimes I feel for the past few years Lakshay’s life has revolved only around hospitals. Almost everyday, he wakes up with some infection and we have to leave everything and rush him to the hospital. His stomach is swollen and he complains of a severe ache in the abdomen. Doctors said that his infections are life threatening and it has already started affecting his organs.” - Monica Puri, mother of 6-year-old Lakshay.

Little Lakshay is battling with several infections and his immunity has hit a rock-bottom. He has to live in a very controlled environment and a minor change can worsen his condition. The doctors feel that the only way Lakshay can lead a normal life is through an urgent bone marrow transplant. But the huge costs of the surgery is a major hindrance for the family.

Lakshay had a persisting pain in his left ankle that made his parents take him to the hospital

6-year-old Lakshay has been diagnosed with Brutons Agammaglobulinemia. It is an inherited disorder in which a person has very low levels of protective immune system proteins called immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulins are a type of antibody. Low levels of these antibodies indicate that the body will be more prone to any kind of infections.

Lakshay used to complain of a pain in his left ankle and soon we noticed that he can’t walk properly, he walked with a limp. We had given him some medicines but his condition was not getting any better. We had to take him to the doctor, several tests were done and then we got to know about our son’s medical condition. This was the first time we heard something like this. It came as a bolt from the blue to us - we did not know what to do to make Lakshya’s life any better.” - Monica.

Lakshay’s infections are spreading rapidly and will soon turn life-threatening

Immediately after Lakshay was diagnosed, he underwent treatment. It has been some time that Lakshay has been under treatment but that has not been able to make his condition any better. He has been suffering from severe bacterial infections which have started affecting the other organs of the 6-year-old.

“He has been under treatment for so long but he doesn’t seem to be improving. The swelling in his stomach hurts so much, doctors are telling us that without  the transplant he would lose his life. He runs a temperature and is very weak. I look at him and feel so helpless that we can do nothing for Lakshay.”- Udit Puri, father.

Little Lakshay's life has changed for the worse ever since he was diagnosed

Lakshay was an avid video game player and his parents had a hard time trying to make do anything when he remained glued to the screen. Everything, but school.

 Lakshay, when he was healthy

"Lakshay loved going to the school. Every morning, he woke up on his own without a fuss and got ready himself. Only lunch was a problem. He would not let me repeat the same thing even for a day. Now, all of this seems like a dream. I don't know if he will ever get better and start going to school," - Monica broke down as she said this.

The parents are struggling to give their only son a healthier life

Udit works in a private firm and has been single-handedly taking care of Lakshay’s treatment for the past few years. From day one, the costs of the treatment have been huge and now Lakshay needs a bone marrow transplant which would cost them 36 lakhs. Udit is in no position to arrange for funds for the transplant.

“I have tried very hard all this while to not stop his treatment, even if I had to borrow from my relatives and colleagues. But now the cost is too much for me. I don’t know what will happen to my son if I can’t arrange for this transplant - I don’t want to lose him at any cost.” - Udit.
