3-year-old Is Battling A Dreadful Cancer And Only Urgent Treatment Can Save His Life

“Kaivalya is just 3-year-old but he is a very smart child. We have not told him anything about his illness but I fear he knows that something serious is going on with him. Once while we were taking him to the hospital by the local train, he asked me ‘Maa, this is not going to be as painful as the last time, right?’ I promised him that this time it would be better but with every passing day, he is suffering more and he is not able to bear the pain." - Devyani, Mother.

Little Kaivalya is battling cancer and is going through a lot of pain everyday. He has not been able to eat anything properly and ends up vomiting almost anything that he eats. The doctors have told Devyani and Yashwant that the only way their son will get better is through several more cycles of chemotherapy followed by an immediate bone marrow transplant. But the parents are too poor to afford the huge costs of the surgery.

Kaivalya was down with a 15-day long fever that scared his parents

Kaivalya has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, it starts in the bone marrow and it prevents immature blood cells from growing into healthy blood cells. Every day he wakes up with a sharp pain in his bones, joints or sometimes even in his stomach. The 3-year-old is now too weak to even sit up and play. Kaivalya’s parents had enrolled him to a play school in the month of April. Things were looking all fine for him but suddenly he had a fever that did not subside for a long time.

“His temperature was really high and it was coming back after every 6 or 7 hours. We thought it was just a normal fever and so had given him some medicines. But there was no sign of recovery. We got very scared and decided it’s time that we take him to the hospital. It was here after several tests that we got to know Kaivalya has cancer.” - Devyani.

The parents were shattered when they heard that their son has cancer

Devyani and Yashwant could not accept the fact that their little Kaivalya has been diagnosed with something as deadly as cancer. Their life have not been the same since. They have been in and out of the hospital for their son’s treatment. Devyani has constantly stayed by her son’s side in the hospital whereas Yashwant’s  sleepless nights were spent in the hospital corridors.

“He is just three and the doctors are saying that he has cancer. I refused to believe when I first heard that and several days passed before Devyani helped me to come to terms with this fact. I try to be strong in front of my son but often break down in front of my wife. I fear that I might fail in saving his life. I feel completely lost.” - Yashwant.

The chemotherapy has had a devastating effect on the life of the 3-year-old

Immediately after it was found out that Kaivalya has cancer, he was taken in for the chemotherapy. Kaivalya started suffering from several side effects. His little body is poked with needles everywhere and he couldn't bear the pain.

“He could not eat or drink anything for many days. He started having severe diarrhea and once or twice we even noticed blood in his vomit. His breathing trouble had also increased then. It was impossible for us to see him suffering in front of our eyes. He kept on writhing in pain and I tried to calm him down by holding him close to me but nothing helped.” - Devyani recalled.

Despite trying their level best, the parents are not able to gather the fund for their son’s treatment

Yashwant works in a private firm and his monthly income of Rs 10,000 is not enough to support the family at times, leave alone carrying out a bone marrow transplant.

“I have spent around 4 lakhs for Kaivalya’s treatment and all my savings have been used up. I have been borrowing from my relatives and colleagues but I don’t know how long this is going to continue. The surgery requires 42 lakhs - never in my life have I seen so much money. I am ready to be the donor but I have no idea how I can arrange for this amount and I have no one to turn for help.” - Yashwant.
