After Meeting With An Accident, This Single Mother Is Struggling To Save Her Son From Cancer

“I was hit by a bike while I was walking back home and injured both my legs. I was still recovering from the injuries when I found out that my son's cancer had relapsed. Despite the excruciating pain in my legs, I did everything I could start his treatment. Some days I get so tired and exhausted that I feel like giving up. But Hemanth is the only reason for my happiness and I cannot imagine losing him. He has been through more than one could ever imagine. He doesn’t say anything to me, but I can feel the pain that he’s going through every time he looks at me with his weary eyes. He’s losing his strength with every passing day, and now without a rupee left to save him, I’m afraid that he might lose his life too.” - Shyamala, with tears in her eyes.

Shyamala was abandoned by her husband when Hemanth was just 3 years old

Hemanth and his younger sister Akshaya(13) were little kids when their father abandoned them. Hemanth never talks about his father, and to him, his mother is his strongest support. Shyamala struggled hard to look after her kids, but amidst all the hardships and struggles, it was Hemanth bright smile that would cheer Shyamala up. Shyamala, who was once totally dependent on her husband, was slowly able to look after her family on her own. Hemanth always supported her and they used to find joy in little things. But their happiness was shortlived when Hemanth was first diagnosed with cancer, three years ago. Hemanth was suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a severe form of blood cancer that affects the lymph nodes and spreads aggressively if not treated on time.

Hemanth during better days

He was growing weak with each passing day and barely had the strength to get up from his bed. I couldn’t see him going through this pain. And so, I immediately started his treatment with the help of my friends and relatives. Hemanth was slowly recovering and he was getting better. After going through such a painful struggle I thought my son could finally have a normal life. “ - Shyamala, mother

Hemanth was all set to start the new academic year but cancer relapsed and brought his life to a standstill

Shyamala thought all of Hemanth’s struggle had come to an end after his treatment. He was getting better and life resumed to normal. For three years, Hemanth was cancer-free. But to her despair, the cancer that Hemanth fought three years back had relapsed - just when he was going to start the new academic year this year. Hemanth now needs to undergo chemotherapy to survive, but Shyamala is struggling to afford the treatment.

“It gave me immense joy looking at Hemanth happy and healthy once again. He was regaining his strength slowly and used to play with his sister all the time. He would even ask me to let him go out and play. But fearing that he might get some infection or fever, I used to tell him to stay at home. All of my worst fears came true when his cancer has relapsed. Now I don’t have a rupee left to continue his treatment.” - Shyamala, mother

Having no source of income, Shyamala is struggling every day to meet the treatment expenses

Shyamala could look after her children with the support from her father and her sisters. Her father used all his savings and even borrowed money for Hemanth’s cancer treatment the first time. Shyamala could start her son’s treatment for cancer this time with the help of her friends, but now after exhausting everything she had and having no one else to seek help from, Shyamala is struggling to continue her son’s treatment.
