“He got cancer when he was 3 years old. He never had a normal childhood. Every day we feared for his life. Now, after everything my son went through, he is still not free from pain. - Bhushan, father of DruthinFor 8 years, Druthin has been fighting cancer. He is 10 years old now, old enough to understand that he is slowly dying. His father, a farmer has done everything he could do to keep him alive but now he has nothing left when his son is fighting his final battle. Without help this family lives in fear of losing their son.
Bhushan and Savita are Doddagadduvalli, a small village in Hassan, Karnataka. Their son Druthin was diagnosed with cancer when he was only 3. After treatment for the next three years, Druthin was better and needed only maintenance chemotherapy. Unfortunately, after five years, his cancer is back and chemotherapy is not enough to save Druthin anymore.
In the last five years, Druthin grew up to be a smart, loving child
“We are both only class 10 passouts. We wanted our children to study well, but after Druthin's cancer – we just want them to be healthy. Druthin loves everyone so much. He tells us he is better now and that we should go home. We remind him that we can't and he's too tired to argue any more. What else can he do?” – Savita, Druthin's mother.
Druthin was on maintenance chemotherapy for the last five years. His blood counts were normal and he was growing. It is a time his parents think back with a bittersweet happiness. It was when they started to move forward from the shadow of cancer that they had been fighting off. The relapse of cancer has left them shattered and scared to hope.
Bhushan already spend everything he earns on paying back loans for treatmentDespite the family's best efforts, Druthin's cancer has relapsed. He is undergoing chemotherapy but is no longer enough and he needs a bone-marrow transplant to survive cancer this time. His condition is rapidly worsening. He spends his days laid down by fever, chest pain and vomiting. Bhushan spends day and night praying that he can save his son.
“When we heard how much money is needed for treatment, it felt like a stone fell on our heart. I can't bear to see him in pain – what can I do? I earn Rs 60,000 after every harvest. I have borrowed lakhs for treatment last time. We have nothing left after paying off our debts.” – Bhushan.
The parents have sacrificed everything to bring Druthin to the hospital
“Our older daughter needs to start college, but she is alone at home because Druthin's condition is so bad. Druthin sometimes cries and asks for akka (older sister) and once again we feel our courage leave us. Only Druthin and his mother are in the hospital. I come here in the morning and go back to sleep in a relative's house.” – Bhushan.
How you can helpDruthin treatment is too expensive for his farmer father. He mortgaged and sold everything they had to arrange for treatment last time. Every day, Druthin gets weaker and his chances of recovery grow slimmer. After struggling for over 8 years with cancer – it is Druthin's final chance.
