Forced To Stay Apart While Their Newborn Is Critical In The ICU, This Couple Needs Your Help To Save Him

In December, just before the dawn of the new year, Revathi and Rajesh saw many things fall into place. Revathi was pregnant and glowing, Rajesh got a new, better job in Chennai and they were happy, the happiest they’d been in months – it was almost too good to be true. On January 5th, while Revathi was in the operating theatre bleeding profusely before her c-section, Rajesh was struggling to find a way to come back to Bengaluru to be with his wife. A 4 hour, anxiety-filled journey later, Rajesh reached the hospital to find his wife unconscious and his baby in the ICU.

“I woke up to see my husband by my side, but my baby wasn’t next to me. All I knew is that he was a boy, I don’t remember seeing his face or them taking him away. My memory is foggy of that day. The first thing I said is that I want to see my baby, but I couldn’t for two whole days.” - Revathi, mother.

Revathi and Rajesh’s baby boy is now 13-days-old. Hardly 900 grams when he was born, he was immediately taken to the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) as he couldn’t breathe on his own. Now, he’s still on ventilator support, but there are days when he breathes on his own, though for a few minutes only – it’s still progress for the little one. The baby boy needs to stay in the NICU for at least 5 weeks to recover.

All Revathi can do when she sees her baby, is stroke his arm with her. While Revathi now stays in the waiting room outside the NICU all day, Rajesh calls her every few hours to find out about the baby. It kills him to not be with them but he had no choice – four days of leave at a new job was more than he could get, and without the job, he wouldn’t have a chance to keep their baby alive. Being with each other would’ve slightly eased this terrible journey.

“We can’t afford 8 lakhs. We’ve never seen or had that kind of money in our lives. I can see that he’s getting better with each day that he’s here, but Rajesh’s job at the private company isn’t enough. It will take us years to be able to save this amount.” – Revathi
