Milaap Champions: Kamesh Babu

Kamesh Babu is is an experienced Telecom Managed Services Professional. He was part of the initial starting team of OnMobile Global Ltd and an investor in Prakat Solutions Pvt Ltd. He is also a patron of Puttenahalli Lake Improvement Trust  and  Milaap. We asked him a few questions, and this is what he said:

How did you get to hear about Milaap?

I came to know about  Milaap through Sourabh Sharma who is co-founder of Milaap.  We worked together in OnMobile Global Ltd.

Why do you lend on Milaap?

I lend because I completely believe in the model and what it can do as well as the impact.  Instead of giving donation, here you are giving loan at a much lower rate which the normal banks don’t give and the borrower also has the sense of repaying the money. You are enabling and empowering them.

Is there any particular sector on Milaap you regularly lend to? If yes, why?

Nothing in particular. I leave that to Milaap team to manage and I want to give that freedom to them.

Who/what inspired you to do what you do now?

It is just whatever first available opportunity I got, I took it and since it was interesting, I continued in same field.

If you were to change it, what would you do instead? Why?

School with right brain-focused teaching. Most people, including myself, went through left brain-focused education: the analytical way of doing things whereas the solutions to many things in life or jobs are from the more creative/right brain thinking side.

Any question for us?

Q: What is your vision or goal for Milaap and where do you want to reach in the next 5-10 years?

A: We can answer about the next 5 years. We plan to impact the lives of 2 million people in India, have disbursed US$ 75 million and have operations in 15 states in India.

Any thoughts or interesting thing you would like to share with us and our supporters?

I would advise you as a startup to tighten the financial control as you scale and have a strong board who can guide. (Thank you for this advice Kamesh!)

Thank you so much for your thoughts Kamesh!
