His Leg Was Amputated Due To Cancer, Now This NCC Cadet Will Lose His Life Without Help

Sumesh is at home right now – not because he has completed his cancer treatment and is cancer-free, but because his family can’t afford his treatment. The only thing that can save his life is chemotherapy. He already lost his left leg to the cancerous tumour. Sumesh now has to be carried everywhere by his father – even to the washroom. The helplessness, the pain is only increasing.

“Every day he’s getting worse. We’re watching our son…die before our eyes and we can’t do anything.” -Sushma Devi

An NCC Cadet, a sportsman – his future now uncertain

Sumesh (16) is an NCC cadet. His mornings would begin with training – he would be the happiest then, no matter how early he had to wake up. One such morning, Sumesh fell while training. He hurt his left leg but for days he pretended like everything was fine. Sunil and Sushma had no idea.

He even continued playing cricket and football every day. He didn’t tell them until he couldn’t bear the pain. That he couldn’t walk at all…we all went with him for the tests. They told us it was cancer, a tumour in his leg. He looked at me and said ‘didi, will I survive?’..what could I say?” – Rakhi

Sunil took a loan and started Sumesh’s treatment. For 4 months, his chemotherapy continued. But now, he can't go on any further. Sumesh had a surgery to amputate his left leg because of the growing tumour. Now he needs chemotherapy again.

His sister hasn’t left his side through the pain, while his parents struggle to afford his treatment

Sumesh has always been very close to his sisters, especially Rakhi, his oldest sister. She has stayed with him through his treatment, often missing college during his chemotherapy. Rakhi has had to take on a lot of responsibilities suddenly, while Sunil continues to go for work.

“Our mother is in shock. She still can’t believe he has cancer…it has never happened to anyone in our family. My father works in a jute mill, he earns. Rs. 300 per day. It’s a big thing for him to have spent 3 lakhs on his treatment already…he can’t afford to continue the treatment. My parents are doing their best.” – Rakhi

The cancerous tumour had grown so much, that Sumesh’s left leg couldn't be saved. But his life can. He needs chemotherapy at the earliest. He lost his leg, but he will be cancer-free with treatment. Your support is the only way Sumesh can survive.
