These Two Brothers Bond Over Their Painful Blood Transfusions While Fighting A Dreadful Disorder

"Some brothers bond over toys, some over sports, but our boys had to bond over their painful blood transfusions in the hospital. Both of them were detected with thalassemia within a month of their birth. Since then, we have spent sleepless nights always dreading the moment that their blood counts start dropping to alarmingly low levels. " - Nasreen, mother

Parents are dejected seeing both their sons fight this painful disorder

15 years ago, Nasreen and Sohail were struggling to believe the harsh reality of their son's blood disorder that was damaging his organs due to severe anemia. Their life had come to a halt, solely revolving around hospitals, doctors, tests, bills and blood transfusions.

Now, years later, their youngest son was also got detected with the same disease, after being sick for months. Unfortunately, these parents are undergoing the same agony all over again, praying for both their sons to survive.

Elder son prays for his brother to get cured first

Their elder son understands the pain of missing out on life as a normal kid due to thalassemia. Both of them can't play, run or do anything that other kids of their age can easily do. They can get a chance to experience all of this only if they both get a stem cell transplant soon.

"My elder son has matured way beyond his age because of this dreadful disease. Despite all the suffering, he has never thrown a tantrum. Rather, he cheers his younger brother up to not cry when they prick him with the needles. He is aware that we don't have the money to afford both the transplants. He always insists us to get his brother's transplant done on priority so that he doesn't have to go through the same pain as him, and that breaks my heart." - Sohail, father

Father sells broomsticks in an attempt to afford both their tranplants

Sohail makes broomsticks for a living and then goes door to door, in an attempt to sell them. His sales have dipped drastically because of him being at the hospital for long hours to take care of his sons.

"I'm unable to cover all the localities now, so the broomstick sales have hit a dent. I keep rushing to the hospital every now and then, as we have to run tests for my son's heart, lungs and other organs, to monitor how much it has affected their functioning. That terrifies me beyond anything. These transfusions are putting pressure on his organs, so a transplant is the only cure left now. Whatever I earn daily, I put it in their transfusion, leaving me with no savings at all. It will cost me a total of INR 33 lakhs to save them both now." - Sohail, father

It is not easy for any parent to see both their kids battle a life-threatening condition, each day of their lives. These brothers dote on each other and are inseparable. They are each other's reason to smile in these dark times. They just wish to lead a normal life which can happen only with their transplants.
