His wife, Kamala was busy doing her daily chores when she suddenly realised that it has almost an hour that Manguli hasn’t come out of the washroom. Madhusudan, his elder son, knocked on the door but there was no reply. After 15 minutes of knocking, Madhusudan had to break open the washroom door only to find Manguli unconscious on the floor.

Madhusudan and Kamala wasted no time to take Manguli (52) to the hospital. He has been in the ICU since then but he hasn’t opened his eyes even for once. He needs immediate surgery to fix the brain haemorrhage. “My mother hasn’t left his side even for a few minutes. All she does is cry and pray for his fast recovery. Whenever the doctor is on his rounds, she keeps asking when he will be fine. I try to console her as much as I can but I am scared that if we can’t afford his surgery, we will lose him,” - Madhusudan, eldest son.

Manguli owns a small shop in Rasulgarh, Odisha where he sold vegetables. He was the sole earning member of his family of 5. Madhusudan had started helping out his father only a few months back - one of his younger brothers is in college, and another one is mentally challenged.“Father used to make a decent income. There were some difficulties but we were managing. But with my father in the ICU now, we are lost. All our savings are used up and our relatives have also helped us as much as they could have. We have spent over 2 lakhs but we need 5 lakhs more to go ahead with the surgery - please help us.”
