“People keep telling us that we can always have another kid. But they don’t understand that we don’t want to lose Ishrat. We are determined to save her but the cost...it's scaring us,” - Imdadul, father of 4-month-old Ishrat.Ishrat would rest in her mother's lap one moment, curiously looking around, but the next moment she would break into tears. Little Ishrat was born healthy but in an unexpected turn of events, Ishrat’s health deteriorated two months after her birth.
“We never expected this. She is just 4 months old and has to go through this. She cries in pain and I can do nothing to comfort her,” – Hasna, mother.Ishrat is diagnosed with Biliary Atresia and chronic liver disease. In simple terms, this means that one of her bile ducts is missing from the liver. To cure this condition, she requires an urgent liver transplant.
“Her eyes and body turned pale yellow. Soon, her stomach swelled abnormally. She looked weak and her face turned pale.”- Hasna, mother. The local doctors were unable to ascertain the disease and Ishrat was referred to a major hospital. Ishrat was brought to Delhi for further treatment. After a series of tests and consultations, the symptoms indicated towards Jaundice but the tests revealed a much more serious condition.
This is not what we had in mind when we held her for the first time...
