Saving Akshaya: A 13-Year-Old's Battle with Cancer

When Akshaya was diagnosed with cancer, it was a devastating blow for her family. The news broke her family. In their hour of need, you can help them cope with the crisis and save their daughter’s life.

Early Signs

Akshaya, a 13-year-old has always been lanky and frail. But, her parents never suspected that she might be suffering from something as deadly as cancer. She developed a lingering fever. Despite several visits to the hospital, the fever couldn’t be cured. She developed a strange bitter taste in her mouth that refused to go away and her constant complaints of pain in the joints and tooth alarmed her family.

Last month, a series of blood tests confirmed that something was terribly wrong. Owing to the blood disorder, she had to be immediately admitted to the local hospital. When the doctor shared the news with Sridhar, Akshaya’s father over phone, he didn’t know how to react. He could barely explain it to his manager and rushed to the hospital. Seeing Akshaya in turmoil, his father felt helpless. But, he knew he would go to any length to save her.

She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia – a cancer of blood in which the bone marrow makes immature white blood cells in excess.

Figuring Out Finances for Her Treatment

Akshaya’s diagnosis was a turning point for her family. Sridhar, who works as a salesman earns a meagre income of Rs 8,000 per month. His wife, on the other hand, is a tailor. Her income isn’t fixed and is dependent on as and when she gets orders.

Since last month, their daughter has been admitted to the hospital and the family has already spent Rs 60,000 till date. “My wife sold her jewelry to pay the medical bills,” Sridhar said.

Akshaya has an elder brother, Dinesh, who studies in Class 10. The family has been receiving funds for their children’s education from Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. “Our landowner is also helping us with their education,” Sridhar said.

Gripped with the fear over the coverage of their daughter’s medical treatment, Sridhar doesn’t know whom to ask for help. “We have already spent all the money that we had. I don’t know what to do,” he said.

As per Akshaya’s doctor, Dr. Julius Xavier Scott , she needs to undergo chemotherapy right away. The estimated cost of the treatment and the supportive care would be Rs 500,000.
