The next two weeks will decide our country’s fate. If we, as a people, can unite and fight this pandemic together, not only will we be able to control the damage done so far, we can prevent further damage as well. The time to act is now.
Dr. Ravikant, Founder and President of Doctors For You

Bihar: A State on High Alert

At present, the state of Bihar is on high alert due to 2 COVID 19 cases of which one patient died primarily because of renal failure and 6 suspected cases admitted at AIIMS in Patna. The state authorities have stepped up vigilance by screening more than 5,000 people returning to the state from various metropolitan cities.

Yet with lockdown enforced in major cities, Bihar is witnessing a huge influx of migrant workers coming back to their hometowns, with potential carriers of the virus, many young and asymptomatic.

Doctors For You is a well-known not-for-profit organization known for its medical relief during disaster across South Asia. Amongst other activities, their work in India includes a hospital in Bihar managed by 80+ hospital staff which played a significant role during the Bihar floods and Encephalitis outbreak last year. Vistex Hospital operated by Doctors for You (DFY) has served more than 4,650 patients from May to December 2019.  The patient profile included patients from 70 villages of Fatuha Block and nearby areas of Patna and Nalanda districts of Bihar.

20-Bedded Isolation Facility To Be Setup in 2 Weeks

With an increasing gap in the health services preparedness required for Coronavirus management in the state. Doctors For You (DFY) is setting up a 20-bedded facility (along with isolation facility) for the management of suspected and serious COVID19 cases. With no other specialty care health facility nearby, Vistex hospital is the only hospital located in the area that can provide quality emergency health care services within such a short time.

Preparing for a possible onslaught of Coronavirus positive patients

' We just admitted our first patient at the quarantine center. Isolation and quarantine are key to stop further spread of COVID-19, but we are in a short supply of equipment and medical resources needed. We have already started organizing our OPDs in such a manner that patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms are attended separately from other patients and spaced out so as to avoid overcrowding’

To ensure, the medical infrastructure is prepared for any possible influx of patients, they have carried out the following activities
  • The hospital carried out a COVID 19 preparedness drill
  • 20 beds set apart and prepared for creating isolation facilities in the hospital
  • 5 beds with Ventilators facility
  • Hospital to procure sufficient numbers of ventilators and high flow oxygen masks in preparation for future requirements

Building staff capacity in Bihar to manage an epidemic is not easy.

Dr. Ravikant understands it’s not just the physical infrastructure that would suffice, but also the build the capacity of medical professionals and support staff needed (80+) to manage the center for the next 2-3 months

The Need to Mobilize Medical equipment and supplies on a war-footing

“We need ambulances, thermometers, masks, we need to hire staff, and so much more... there's so much left to do, and such limited time. China constructed, from the ground up, a 25,000sft hospital in just 8 days to battle the novel coronavirus. We have 2 weeks, and thankfully we already have a hospital as well. We just need the equipment and staff to turn it into a specialized COVID-19 Emergency Quarantine Hospital, ready to observe suspected cases, and treat confirmed cases. Our resources are extremely stretched, through our own efforts, and because we’ve been helping the government all over the country. We need your help to get this Emergency Hospital running, and we need the help now. Time is more critical than it has ever been. Donate as much as you can.” — Dr. Ravikant
