Domestic workers are those which do the chores in our houses such as cleaning, gardening, and cooking. During the COVID lockdown, those workers could not visit houses, and thus, could not perform their jobs. Majority of the households were kind enough to continue giving salaries for the first 2 and a half months of the lockdown. However, feeling the pinch themselves, these households are beginning to stop paying the salaries. Also, with the lockdown having lifted, although these workers are allowed to go to work again, people are justifiably afraid of letting others into their homes due to possible contamination.
I feel that these domestic workers need our support now more than ever. Thus, in order to help these workers, I have begun a project to assemble care packages for the domestic workers and their families in my neighbourhood-Gurgaon, DLF Phase 2- that will hopefully help them out during this tough time. These packages contain essential food items like rice, rajma, dal, oil and sugar, as well as soaps and masks.
If there is anything this lockdown has taught us it is that the jobs these workers do are, in fact, extremely difficult, and we need to give back to them in their times of need. Even small amounts of donation make a difference, so please be sure to donate!
