Dear all,

TL;DR- The SG and DemCol Workers’ Fund is having another round of donations as many workers need funds urgently. Our current target amount is 1 Lakh Rupees. Please share this amongst your circles and contribute if you can!

We hope that you all are doing well!

Firstly, we would like to thank everyone for their contributions to all fundraising activities to support workers at Ashoka. It was due to your efforts that we were able to collect Rs.4,48,580/-, last summer. Accordingly, we were able to transfer Rs.12,000/- to 26 workers who had not received any salary for months. Since then, it has allowed us to transfer funds to other workers in case of emergencies. We all really appreciate all of your efforts made towards this cause.

While the workers can approach the Workers Welfare Committee (WWC) for financial assistance, the WWC usually offers a uniform method of fund disbursement and generally transfers Rs.6000/- at a time, which is often less than what a worker requires. Following this, workers often approach us.
We’ve continued to receive requests to support the workers in cases such as repayment of the debt, payment of their children’s school fees, medical expenses, etc. Unfortunately, given that we have been regularly appropriating funds, we are now running low on funds.

Considering that a lot of these cases are time-sensitive, we do not want the money crunch on our end to add to their problems. Consequently, we’ve decided to have another round of fundraising so we can continue to support the workers in whatever capacity we can.

Moreover, we would also like to inform you that we are currently pushing for the WWC to be reconstituted such that it becomes an elected body with representation from workers. This would enable the workers to have control over how the official fund is distributed, which we believe would be a very crucial step towards their well-being. However, in the meantime, we hope that this round of fundraising will cover the needs of the workers until the committee is reconstituted.

Lastly, we would like to again make a sincere request to all of you to contribute towards the fund generously and help us achieve the target fund in record time.

If you have any questions or would like to donate using any other platform, please write back to us on this thread and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

In Solidarity,
The Seventh House of Representatives and The Democracy Collective
