After working in the banking(Khushali) and IT industry(Tushar) for a few years, we joined the Teach for India fellowship. As a part of the fellowship (2017 to 2019), we got an opportunity to work with and teach 115 children (now young adults) from low income communities in the Yerwada area of Pune. We saw the immense potential that each child carried. But we also witnessed first hand the challenge to this very potential - an everyday life of inequity that stacked challenges one after another in front of them. “How do these children even persevere so much?”, “How our lives would have been, had we been born in their family?” were some questions they could never stop wondering about.
After the fellowship, both of us continued our journey in the education domain in the non-profit sector. At the same time, we kept in touch with our students from fellowship, supporting them from time to time with ad hoc-support requests - ration, college fees, mental and physical health, counselling support, connecting to learning opportunities and access to other resources like mobile phones. We witnessed that due to Covid access to basic food, education and sustenance was made more difficult for our students and their families.
This made our earlier realisation stronger - These young adults -- our hope for the future-- would need constant support in their journey towards creating a life of dignity as adults. The inequities they face need to be counter balanced with financial, mental, emotional and social support. It seems daunting but entirely possible and the belief in this possibility took the form of Nishchay in July 2021.
This Fundraiser is a part of THE NISHCHAY PROJECT where our vision is that in the year 2026 all our students will pursue a livelihood with dignity in alignment with their aspirations.
With our efforts and your support we hope to help our students realise their dreams.
