Background
On 25th April 2017, shortly before Naresh Mahto’s daughter Pratima was to get married, an accident caused by a small gas cylinder blast resulted in her brother Pawan Kumar’s death and caused severe burn injuries to Pratima and her sister in law Gayatri Devi.
We had run a Milaap campaign to support Pratima’s treatment (see link) in May 2017. It took little over a year for Pratima and Gayatri to recover after multiple surgeries and treatment. Pratima, who had sustained 70% burn injuries survived after a long battle in the hospital. However, the boy with whom she was getting married declined to marry her as the accident left scars on her face and body.
It was unthinkable to even think that Pratima would ever get married after suffering such extensive burns. However, the wheels of time have turned favorably and the family has been able to find a suitable match for her in Jagdish. The couple are engaged to be married in April 2019.
Poor Financial Condition
The Mahto family comes from one of the lowest strata of our society. Pratima’s father Shri Naresh Mahto works in a socks manufacturing factory in Delhi, drawing a meager salary of INR 15,000 per month. The family lost their eldest son Pawan and whatever little savings they had in the April 2017 accident. Now they are barely able to meet their ends meet and have no money for Pratima’s marriage.
Goal of this Campaign
Due to their poor condition and the accident in April 2017, the Mahto family does not have any fund left for the marriage. Their only recourse is to sell their only piece of land which is valued at INR 2.5 lakh or borrow money at high interest rates from the money lenders which they will never be able to pay off. The goal of this campaign is to raise INR 4 lakh towards Pratima’s marriage expenses and as support to her for settling in her married life.

My name is Ashutosh Joshi and I am based in Delhi-NCR working as Manager Finance for a large MNC. Inspired by the dynamic leadership of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, I have decided to do my bit by helping our Nation’s grass root heroes. I am the moderator of this campaign.
