    This fundraiser will benefit

    Kamlesh Pawar

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. This adage is apt for Kamlesh Jaywanth Pawar who in medical terms has mental retardation with just 50% IQ. Born in a humble background, Kamlesh’s mother is a domestic helper who does household work to survive and his father is a cobbler who lost the zest for life/work when his shop got submerged in water in July 2005 Mumbai floods.

Kamlesh was delivered when his mother was just 14 years of age.  Right from birth, this boy has been a fighter; he was just 1.5 kgs at birth with dry flaky skin. Doctors said he would not survive at all but he made it. He did not cry, open his eyes, or speak/walk till he was almost 8 years. The fact that Kamlesh is now 18 years old, fit and fine is no short of a miracle. He does have health issues of and on but he has the grit, will power to face them . This journey has not been easy as his relatives wanted to abandon him. He had a major surgery 7 years ago and as always  he bounced back.

With the help of his mother who left no stone unturned to support, love and care for  him he regained some speech, walked and joined  a school for special children. Kamlesh is independent and does all his chores and household work too. He is particular about hygiene, grooming. He is creative, intuitive. He can write his name, recognise words/letters/ numbers. He is able to travel all alone with the help of address in his pocket provided he is trained well on the travel route.

He has a fairly good memory for his brain capacity. His hobbies are music, dance and he is a huge Salman Khan fan.  He loves to read, write, spell and speak on camera. He can converse to function optimally. He is bold, social,  amiable and fun loving. He has a good attention span and high levels of intellectual curiosity to crack things that look daunting to him. He never gives up. He loves to learn on a computer which his mother cannot afford now at home.

Unfortunately, since the lockdown this year, his mother Jyoti has lost a couple of jobs and with stringent rules it's been hard for her to make ends meet. Additionally, the school cum workplace where Kamlesh was learning life skills and computer training also is shut. Kamlesh’s mother

somehow managed to support his education, treatment, and his training so far with minimal external support. She has no assets in her name and now there is a contemplation in the family to send Kamlesh to the village to beg for alms or run odd errands.

Kamlesh deserves a dignified life, a place in the society where he could manage himself with additional skill-based training on life, technology, special education, speech therapy, medical treatment, and equipment. We look forward to your financial support in getting this sharp young man the life that he dreams of; especially for education, medical treatment, and buying equipment like a computer. Your contribution would also be like a security for the mother who dreads the fact that he would be taken away and be prey to human trafficking.

Thanking you in anticipation for your kind gesture,

APARNA RAGHURAM
