    Twins of Sunitha

    from Bengaluru, Karnataka

“In our village girl children are not celebrated as much as boys are. I’ve heard people ask parents to give up on their sick daughters. I have seen parents give up too…only because they are girls. Sunitha and I have twins, both girls! They have been sick ever since they were born 1-month-ago, but we haven’t given up, and we won’t until we take them home healthy!”
– Umesh Kumar, father

They had half an hour to decide their babies’ fates

Sunitha and Umesh haven’t had an easy life. They both worked hard, for long hours in their respective jobs. All their hours of work, all the money they saved was for their future, the family that they dreamed of having one day. Unfortunately, in just a span of two years, they lost 2 babies. The misery still hasn’t ended.

“Even though I never got to hold them, they’re still my babies. I will never forget them. When I look at my twin girls I feel like God has given back my two lost children to me. But why like this? With them fighting to survive?” – Sunitha, mother

Sunitha’s twins were born in the 6th month of her pregnancy a little over a month ago when she went for a regular check-up. She was told her babies' lives were in danger, and she needed to deliver them soon. She could decide to wait, but this is their best chance at survival. Sunitha had half an hour to decide.

The twin girls were born severely underweight, struggling to breathe and blood infection. They have been in the NICU ever since. They need to stay there for longer to get healthier, stronger – but Umesh and Sunitha can’t afford it.

They haven’t earned a single rupee in over a month

Sunitha used to work in Kotak Mahindra as an account opener. But she hasn’t gone to work in 5 months. Umesh works for a security company. But he hasn’t gone for work in over a month.

“Our friends and family have helped us. But we still can’t manage. I can’t go out looking for help, I have to be here in case they call me for anything… so I just sit in the waiting room making calls after calls. But…this is our one chance to be parents. Our girls deserve to live!” – Umesh

Umesh and Sunitha are hopeful. They want to take their babies home, they have even decided names – Ridhi and Sidhi. But all of this will only be possible with your help.
