    Tanmoy Sarkar

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

I don’t want to die. I want to study and write public service exams. I want to become a motor vehicle inspector and make my parents proud. I am all that my parents have and if something happens to me, if cancer kills me, who will take care of them?” - Tanmoy

17-year-old Tanmoy has big dreams. Where other kids of his age are usually confused about their career, this young boy has everything planned out for himself. But then doctors diagnosed Tanmoy with cancer, and everything changed. He now has only 5 days to get a life-saving surgery.

People like us can’t afford to be sick

“When I saw the swelling on Tanmoy’s arm, I couldn’t understand what it was. It wasn’t hurting him so I thought it would go away but just within 2 days it got so much bigger that we got scared. Still, we never thought that it could be cancer. People like us can’t even afford to have a minor fever, how will we afford cancer treatment?” - Tarun, father

Tanmoy suffers from chondrosarcoma, a dangerous type of cancer. He needs to get an urgent surgery for the tumour, as the cancer is spreading aggressively. But the poor parents can’t manage the required funds.

My parents are already struggling and I am just adding to their troubles

“I see my parents struggle to even afford daily necessities and when it is time for us to go to the city for a check-up, test, or any such thing, it costs around Rs 4000 just for the travel, let alone the medical expenses. It is a sum that my father sometimes earns only after an entire month of labour. It is because of me, because of my disease, that they have to beg and borrow for money. I am the reason for their struggle...” -Tanmoy

Only 5 days left for surgery

I have just 5 days left for my son's surgery. I have borrowed from my friends and relatives, and taken loans to pay for the tests and treatment so far. I am doing all I can to save my son but I have no money or sources left to continue. I am helpless.” - Tarun

Tarun is a daily wage labourer who toils the field to survive. His income is barely enough to run the house and Tanmoy had wanted to end his parents' suffering. But now they struggle to save their son from the clutches of cancer; they can’t afford this surgery.
