“If only I had let him spend his vacation at his uncle's place in Bhilai, this horrific incident could not have taken place and my son would not be fighting for his life in the ICU...” recounts a woeful Mahendra, the father of a 17-year-old boy who is a victim of a shocking train accident.

After falling off a running train, the child has sustained severe head injuries

13 May, 2023, started off on a regular note for the Sahare family. Like most days, Mahendra woke up early in the morning and started getting ready for work. Before leaving, he woke his son and exchanged a few pleasantries, completely oblivious to the fact that he might be listening to his son’s voice for the last time.

“I was on duty, driving out of town, when this incident took place. I received a call from my brother-in-law, who informed me that my son was part of a terrible train accident, and was admitted in a hospital. I froze; it felt like my whole world was snatched away from me. However, I snapped myself out of it, and immediately informed my family and a few relatives in Nagpur, who rushed to the hospital.” - Mahendra

The 17-year-old was travelling from his hometown to Nagpur along with his younger cousin, when a bump led to him losing balance and falling off the moving train. He received a hard blow to his head, and severe injuries to his brain and chest. Luckily, the Railway Protection Force personnel were alert and rushed him to a nearby hospital in Nagpur.

Archana, the 17-year-old’s mother, was shaken when she heard the awful news

“I was completely numb, but so many questions were running through my mind—how, why, and when did this happen to my only son? When I reached the hospital, I was so scared to see him. When I did, I could not recognize him at all! He was on a ventilator, completely covered with pipes!” – says a tearful Archana.

The estimated cost of further treatment is too expensive for them

Due to the high-impact injury to his head, he has serious internal injuries and bleeding in the area between his brain and skull, and a severe infection of the lungs. As per doctors, it will take 3-4 months of hospitalization for him to recover. With piling medical costs, it is getting difficult for Mahendra and his wife to manage the daily expenses.

“I am a simple man. I earn a meagre salary by driving a car for a company, and my wife is a homemaker. How can a man who makes 9,000 rupees per month afford medicines worth 15,000 rupees per day? We’ve sold whatever little jewelry we had and exhausted all our savings; my family and friends have been of great support and have already lent me as much money as they could. Ten lakhs is an impossible amount for me to afford in this lifetime.”

The parents are hopeful that their child will recover

While both Mahendra and Archana are often lost in thought, wondering how and why this incident occurred, they have not lost hope.

“We are staying strong for each other, and for the sake of our son and 14-year-old daughter. Somewhere down, we deeply believe that he will be up on his feet soon and call out to his “Papa” as he does every day. I can’t wait for that day to come and I will happily take him to Bhilai or anywhere he wishes to go.”
