Joseph is the epitome of sheer determination and will power. He lost his right leg in a major bike accident in the year 2013 when his bike was hit by a speeding car. He was admitted in the hospital with multiple life-threatening injuries and his right leg was amputated above the knee. His disability, however, could not break his spirit.
“On that fateful day, I received a call from the hospital telling me that my husband has met with a major accident. He had gone on a road trip with his friends to Coimbatore. I did not know what to do… I felt so alone and helpless. My elder daughter was just 6 months old at that time. My husband regained conscious only after 2 months and it was the darkest time of my life. But he is the strongest person I know. Despite his disability, he said he would work and take care of us like always.” - Lumina, wife
Joseph has spent more than 25 lakh Rupees for multiple surgeries in the past. He is one-step short of his goal to get the all-new press-fit osseointegration leg implant that would cost him close to 10 Lakh Rupees.
My life changed the day I lost my leg
“The only thought that has been in my head for the last 6 years since my accident is that I’m alive and I should make the most of it. I could have easily died that day but God has let me live and hence I will not give up my efforts to lead a normal life. I haven’t stopped working due to my disability and rather have worked even harder after that day. I bought an auto from junk and restored it all by myself. Now, I drive my auto to earn a living. I also do other mechanical works and fix bikes and cars.” – Joseph JairajHe cannot walk, stand or sit for more than 2 hours at a stretch
Earlier, Joseph used to work as an aircraft paint sprayer in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore. He loved his job and wants to get back to the same job. After his leg amputation, he was fitted with a Jaipur foot which he found as inconvenient. Later, in 2015, his stump was shortened and he progressed to using a hydraulic leg. The hydraulic leg has helped him in his daily work however has limited his mobility and flexibility.I will be the first man in India to get this surgery - and I need it tomorrow
“My dream is to get back to how healthy and fit I was. I went through various sources to understand the new technology that has been developed around the world that helps one get back a leg that is as good as a natural one. During my research, I found out about press-fit osseointegration surgery, an implant that enables improved sensations and flexible mobility. This surgery is popular abroad, whereas, in India, I would be the first person to get it done if everything goes well… And that depends on you. I need your help.” – Joseph RajMy husband is the strongest person I know
Joseph had a very active lifestyle prior to the accident. He was a passionate bike-rider and food lover who loved travelling all over the country on his bike exploring landscapes and cuisines. He also loved swimming. Now, Joseph requires help every time he needs to go to the bathroom or change his dress. He has to remove his leg stump each time and takes the help of his wife or daughters. He often suffers from heat sores, ulcers and frequent separation of the stump from the socket which limits his walking.Joseph has spent more than 25 lakh Rupees for multiple surgeries in the past.
