    Baby of Sanam SK

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

If you enter the hospital, you will see a cute little kid looking at you in wonder. That's Sanam. She is just waiting for her turn to come. She has Thalassemia and she is here for her monthly blood transfusion.

Sanam was just 1 year old when she started feeling extremely sick. It seemed like fever and flu but none of the medicines were working on her. The paleness of her face and eyes used to worry her parents. They couldn't detect what exactly is making her cry all day long. After a test, her parents got to know she has a blood disorder called Thalassemia.

3-year old Sanam's body is destroying its own blood cells

"I had never heard about the name of this disease before. When I got to know what it actually is, I just cried my heart out before telling my wife. How could I tell her that our baby will be injected with blood after every 21 days because her body can't make it on its own? That's how her life will be from now on."- Saifuddin, father

This disorder destroys Sanam's red blood cells automatically in her body, causing her to be anaemic. That's why it's very important for her to keep getting her transfusions done every month. Every month, a few days nearing her transfusion date, she becomes pale and weak. It has been 2 years now that she has been going through this.

Her mother is a matched donor but they still can't afford the surgery

The only way Sanam can lead a normal life now is if she gets a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). Luckily, her mother is a match and she will be the donor. But it is not as easy as it sounds. Her parents don't have 25 lakhs for it. Every month they spend Rs.10,000 to 15,000 for her transfusion. For the last 2 years, they've spent about 5 lakhs on it. There is hardly anything left for them to save for her BMT.

"Right now, she is young and she is with us all the time. As she grows up, it will keep becoming difficult for her to lead a normal life. Once we delayed her transfusion by a day, her eyes and face had become so pale, it felt like someone sucked the life out of her. The doctors told us of a cure which can give her another life but the amount... even if we ask every relative we know, still we won't be able to arrange that kind of money."- Payel, mother

Saifuddin has a shop that supplies cement and he earns Rs.20,000 monthly from it. He also has an elder daughter. Right now, he is able to afford Sanam's blood transfusions, but that is still not enough to ease his daughter's pain. She needs a Bone marrow transplant but they don't have the means to arrange such a huge amount so soon.

Once they had enrolled baby Sanam in a playschool. They thought this will help her to forget her pain, even if it was just for a little while. But once Sanam fainted in school. Since then, they have never let her be away from their sight even for a second. That incident still makes them anxious. They fear in their absence anything can happen to their baby girl. They need your help to be able to gift Sanam a happy and normal childhood.

Only you can gift Sanam a new life. Please help her.
