“It’s been almost 2 months Maa, I want to go back home and play with my brother. When will my cancer be cured? I don’t want to stay in this place anymore,” - Chandana’s eyes fill with tears when she listens to his 11-year-old son, Abhimanyu, ask these questions. She doesn’t have the heart to tell him that he needs to stay in Bangalore for at least 4 months now. He needs to complete his treatment.
 

“But I don’t know how we will afford that, there is hardly anything left with us,” - Chandana sounds worried as she says this.

Your son doesn’t have many days to live

It’s any parent’s nightmare to hear these words about their child from the doctor. So when the doctors in Kolkata told Chandana and her husband, Subir that Abhimanyu might be suffering from a dangerous disease, they got very scared.
 

“We wasted no time. My husband couldn’t come with us, but his brother did. He helped us book the tickets and we came to Bangalore with hopes of getting Abhimanyu cured. It was here that we were told about his cancer. They said it’s spreading fast and without treatment  we will lose him.”

He has already had 3 rounds of chemotherapy and he is responding well to the treatment. He needs a bone marrow transplant to be cured There is hope for this 11-year-old but the question that’s looming in everyone’s mind is if his family can afford that.

Extra hours of work, sleepless nights, skipping meals - that’s all this family has known for the last few months

Subir is a milkman who makes about Rs 10,000 per month by selling the milk from the cows he has at his home in Burdwan, West Bengal. His brother Suvarna also helps him in this. Subir is the only one taking care of everything. Since he got to know of his son’s condition, he has hardly been able to come to terms with that. But he tries not to get too emotional - he works twice as hard so that he can continue his son’s treatment.
 

“My brother can’t be here with us. Someone needs to take care of the business. But he calls us everyday, asking for every detail about Abhimanyu. Sometimes, he breaks down and even though I try to console him, I know the only thing that can calm him down is if we can take Abhimanyu back home, cancer-free,” - Suvarna, uncle.

While Chandana tries to do everything in her capacity to make Abhimanyu feel comfortable when he has a high fever and headache, Suvarna sits outside and scribbles their daily expenses on a piece of paper.

They spent about Rs 6000 on house rent.  He has been skipping meals to save money, he hasn’t told that to anyone.
 

“We have spent over 2 lakhs but we need around 16 lakhs more. The doctors have said that only a bone marrow transplant can cure him completely. This much money is impossible for us to arrange. We need your help.”
